Mikes Sky Ranch to San Quintin

The Baja experience . We left Mike and rode 20 mikes of very technical roadies the twist through the mountains. Lots of tuff up hills and drops. Half way up one of these hills my master link on my chain broke. This took about 45 minutes to repair. We continue on. The sun was out and looked like a great day to ride. At the junction my riding partners Larry and  Brian and I decide to take red route which is a little more difficult. We passed on this yesterday due to rain. It started out fantastic as we road through pastures on single track which the dropped into a creek bed. The drop down was quite steep and when we got in we had multiple creek crossings and mud and sand. This continued for a mile or so. Then we started up out of the creek bed on a trail ( or so they say but I think we where bush whacking). This was very technical on a small bike but I am surprised at how well the690 handed the tight twisty up hills . Dodging cactus and huge rocks. This route was about 2 miles long and end on a twin track which was part of a previous race course. We passed some other riders who where also having difficulty. Kevin and Malvyn and Gary. We where very happy to hit the twin track an opened up the pass. It eventually turned into a open pasture and we were able to make some great time as we where Hungry and Lucy was waiting. Then it happened.RAIN. The road turned to mud. I mean MUD. People and bike are flopping all over the place. Everyone fell. Some got on the gas and made it out. But not all. Long story short. Larry 66, Malvyn 62 and I 63 are stuck. The mud is so bad it clogs the back wheel and stalls the bike or clogs the front wheel and you can't steer . It is noon .  After multiple stops and falls we hunk Larry 66 has fried his clutch. So we are exhausted and stop. The rain finally stops so it looks like if we wait one hour the road will dry enough for at least 2 bike could get out. It started to rain again and by now it's 3 o'clock . We are 10 miles from the highway and civilization. We start to walk. We know that the riders who made it out will begin to start to worry and mount a rescue.. No cell phone coverage. We walk in heavy mud for 2 miles and the soil changes and firms up. It's now 4:30 as the walking is very difficult . We think we may have to sleep out tonight. Finall a Mexican (Louis ) comes by in a small truck and is going in to get his friends who are stuck at a farm. He agrees to pick us up on his way out. We didn't think we would see him again so we continued walking and looking for shelter. About 6:00 Louis shows up with his cousins and we squeeze into the misubizhi trk. He brings us to the hotel and talks with Roberto and we make arrangements to meet at 10:00 am to go back and get the bikes. I paid him 600 pesos and he left with a smile. I had a rum, shower and something to eat . Another rum or two and to bed.

WELCOME TO BAJA YE HOO
